This weekend the hubby and I started cutting down a few dead trees in the yard. On top of them being a huge eye sore, and a pain to clean up after every time the wind blew, we were in need of wood for the new fire pit Nick put in last summer.
We are very fortunate that when Nick’s boss is running short on work, he owns rental properties and he puts Nick to work remodeling (sometimes completely demolishing and rebuilding) and maintaining them. The add bonus would be that every once and awhile Nick brings home a few treasures that were about to be tossed. Like the beautiful slate use in the fire pit, which would typically cost $5 a stone!
Another frugal moment of mine, Nick asked if we should just have a brush fire with all of the branches and twigs. Instead we decided to make individual bundles that would fit in our wood stove to get it started. We alternate between this and natural gas to keep costs down in the winter. Yes I said that curse word, winter. It’s July and we’re already preparing!
